News, October 1:
We are starting Spelling this week. The test will be on Friday, so please help your child study. They will write the words in their planners on Monday and here is a link to a Quizlet for studying: Quizlet - Commonly Misspelled Words
They will also be getting one page (front and back) of Math homework that is due Friday.
They are doing a great job of reading 30 minutes a day and recording, for the most part. We will be having "homework club" on Thursdays if a student is having a hard time getting homework done. This club is a part of our after-school Cub Club and the kids can ride the bus to Twisp or Winthrop when it's over at 5.
They are such great kids!
Hello!
I hope you are having a lovely weekend. Here are a few news updates:
*We are all very excited about our Loup Loup field trip next Friday. Bill will be driving our truck up there, so you can bring your child's skis Thursday or Friday morning or send them on the bus if the driver allows it and we'll get their gear up there for them (if they are bringing their own). Also, I would recommend that they not bring money as it could get lost and we don't want them spending a lot of time in line for food, so make sure you pack plenty. I only had five people say their child was getting school lunch, but if you have changed your mind, let me know because it's not too late! If you are planning on keeping your child up there, please check in with Mrs. Barber or me. Thanks!
*We are almost finished with our Earth and Space unit and will be doing our textbook presentations on Monday, February 5th from 2:30 - 3:00. We hope you can come! There will be snacks. We will also be screening our "Ninety-Second Newbery Giver Movies" and I'm sure some of them will be getting Oscars!
*Report cards will be coming home on Monday, February 5th also. Please remember that report cards are just a snapshot of your children from school. We do our best to grade them fairly in many areas, but we know that they are way more than numbers on a report. Your children are creative, strong, compassionate, competent, resilient, and insightful. They can ski and paint and act and ride motorcycles and sing and do so many things. I hope you all know what blessings you have!
*Finally, let me just say again what a delightful group of kids they are. I feel very lucky and honored to get to work with them.
Mrs. Duguay's class will be making stone soup next Wednesday, the half day before Thanksgiving. Send in a vegetable or two with your child if you want to contribute!
Dear parents and guardians, Jan. 7, 2019
First of all, it's so lovely to be back with your kids; what a wonderful group of fifth graders. Secondly, thanks for all the great gifts you sent us. From tons of homemade goodies to cakes and candles in a cup to gift certificates, we felt totally spoiled.
We finished our first IB Unit, all about exploration (Galleons) and are now into our second one, all about Earth and space. There is a lot more about these units on our website under the IB tab (methow5duguay.weebly.com) if you want to know more. The students are very excited to learn and create some beautiful "textbooks" for you to look at during our celebration at the end of the unit. We're sorry we didn't have an exhibition for Galleons, but time rushes on.
Also, we have a great opportunity at the Loup Loup Ski Bowl. Fifth graders get to ski for free all season and we are having a field trip on February 1st. During this day, equipment and lessons for skiing and snowboarding are all free. We will need help, so please let us know if you can volunteer that day. Paperwork for this fun day will be coming home soon.
As always, make sure your child reads 30 minutes a day and does his or her math homework, if assigned (a little studying for Spelling tests wouldn't hurt either). Remember, as always with homework: Don't agonize. Send us a note if you don't get it! Report cards will be coming home at the end of the month as well. Thanks for all you do!

Hello Dear Parents,
We are going to have a little, low-key Valentine's Day party on Thursday, so if your kids want to make/get Valentine cards, here is a class list. They got them in their mailboxes last week too. They absolutely don't have to bring them if they don't want to. They can bring a snack to share also, if they want. It's probably futile to ask that we keep it healthyish... Also, it's character dress-up day, so they can dress up as their favorite book character that day if they want. Hopefully all of you got the Family Reading month info. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful kids with me! -Jennifer

Hello Dear Parents,
Well, I am starting radiation on Monday and thankfully don't have to do chemo. I am hoping that I can come back the last week of school, at least for half days. We are planning to have a little farewell party on Friday and the kids said they want to bring some food, but only if they want to and it's convenient. The Science Fair/And That's Who I Am exhibit will be Thursday, May 16th at 2:00 in the Cub Gym. I am hoping to come! I really hope the kids will get a lot out of our substitutes who will be Steve Dixon, Joni Stevie and Sonja Knudson. I am planning on keeping up via email, dojo, phone calls and whatever other communication platforms people prefer. I love these kids so much! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Dear Parents and Guardians, June 15, 2019
I have enjoyed this year so much even though it ended strangely. Thanks for all your support. I always like to give a last few words of reminders at the end of the year, but the main thing I want to say is, “Please enjoy your children!” I know it’s a cliché, but this time with your kids is so fleeting! I hope you can make some time to cuddle, create, listen, get outside and play with these wonderful young people.
O.K., now for my teacher voice: Please encourage them to limit their screen time and read, read, read. Our libraries in Twisp (Community Center) and Winthrop (by the park) are great and the librarians are wonderful. Here is the website:
www.ncrl.org You can get free books and movies there and also the website has great recommendations for books. Studies show that kids who read a lot do well in all academic areas!
Here are a bunch more great websites for ideas on summer fun and academic stuff:
https://www.ixl.com/math/ We have this subscription throughout the summer. The kids all have accounts and they could all use more practice in math, at any level. They could work on some sixth-grade standards or reinforce this year's standards or even go back and do some fourth-grade work. Their usernames are first initial, last name @ methow and their password is their lunch number. For example: jduguay@methow and then 1234. If they forget their lunch number, email me and I will find it. [email protected]
If they read a book (hopefully they will read lots) and want to get Reading Counts credit, here is the Reading Counts site:
http://readingcounts.methow.org:55880/slms/StudentAccess
Log-in: first name space last name
Password: Lunch Number
Scholastic has a great website with all sorts of cool stuff. Here’s that website:

And, of course, if you ever want to talk, here is my number: (509) 733-0139.
Love your children; they are so wonderful!

Hello dear parents, Jan. 27, 2020
Happy New Year! Thanks to all of you who came to our Earth and Space end of unit celebration; sorry about the Tang! The Earth and Space books will be in the library soon (when I finish grading them), so you can look at them anytime you come to school.
The month of February's Learner Profile word is Communication, so I am going to try to do a better job at communication and will get an update on our website every few weeks. It will be under the News tab. I used to always do this, but somehow this year got away with me. It’s so easy to put pictures up on Classdojo, but sometimes we need words as well.
Here are a few items of interest: This week is the Great Kindness Challenge. Your kids will be getting a checklist today and we will try to complete as many kind acts as possible this week. Hopefully, this will help set the tone for our year and our lives. Kindness rocks!
I will start in again with the three pages of math homework home on Monday, due on Friday. If this is a huge struggle for your family, please let me know. Also, please make sure your child is continuing to read 30 minutes per day.
Report cards are coming home next week, but please remember that this is just one part of your child’s life. It doesn’t tell you how they are doing in many aspects of their lives! They might be good at sports, driving tractors, taking care of their little sister... They are wonderful humans. We have a new grading system, which is explained in a Parent Guide that will be enclosed with the report card, but if you have any questions, please feel free to call me or the school.
My number is (509)733-0139 and the school is (509)996-2186. As always, please email or call with any concerns and I hope this sick season is over! -Jennifer

Dear Parents,
What a fun unit we are in the middle of right now. We have taken our "Colonial Boston" unit and gamefied it! So, as the kids learn about the events leading up to the American Revolutionary War, they are earning "XP," leveling up and doing side quests. Today was our first Town Meeting and everyone had lots to say about the taxes King George III is imposing on us! Our spelling words this week and next are matching definitions of Math words and we will stop doing Math homework after tomorrow for the rest of the year, but they should continue their half hour of reading. Our testing dates again are English/Language Arts - May 22, 23, and 24 and Math - May 30 and 31. The Young Writer's Conference evening is May 31st if you want to come and listen to kids read their writing and our Pearrygin Lake field trip is June 12th. I have been having such a lovely time with your kids and will cherish the next 20 days!
